Travel

Travelling with a camera is a necessity – we all do it. To a point where our holiday packing is incomplete without some form of camera…

For many the lure of exotic and wild destinations has become affordable and available. A lure that takes us places that our parents’ generation would never have heard of, let alone dreamt of.

But we all do it from behind a camera, and very often only appreciate what we’ve seen upon our return – from a pile of prints or a slideshow on the home computer.

Maybe I’m no different, since many of the images here undoubtedly fit the above generalisation.

Some of the oldest pictures date back to my treks across Asia, when a mechanical camera and a few rolls of film were the only option. In those days you were judicious in your choice of subject matter; and Catholic in your shooting. No preview; No editing on the spot, No re-shoots after the event.

All the other images are contemporary, and reflect the possibilities of travelling digital.

The last point could be lost on many, but it’s only been a few years since ‘Dirty Digital’ came of age, and its limitations [batteries, memory and resolution], were overcome to a point where a traveller could spend months on the road with the need for expensive backup and ‘download’ facilities.
